History

In 1984, four sisters from the Congregation of St. Joseph were working in the shelter system.  Each month they noticed the same women, many with children, returning, cycling through the shelters, yet never being able to find safe, secure housing long enough to gain some footing, get an education, or find a secure job.  They decided to start a program to allow women to do just that.  It took two years, but in that time they found a building to purchase and renovate, created a program and opened their doors.  They created a safe and secure environment large enough to house 61 women, who were wanting to 'transform' their lives from one of neglect, abuse, lack of education, dependence and public assistance to one of safety, education, independence and self-sufficiency.

Today, THI's program has changed 'with the times,' but still remains a safe haven for women determined to create for themselves a secure life; become educated, secure and maintain employment and create a life in a safe environment for themselves and their children.  THI's program is designed with a holistic approach, working with each individual woman's strengths and weaknesses, helping them find their best path for success.

Women entering THI's program can spend up to two years.  After women leave THI, the program staff provides follow up services for up to an additional two years, to ensure they continue their success out in the community.
