THI's Work Experience Program is designed to prepare clients for the workplace. Known as SOAR, the program targets clients who may not be ready for a community-based program or for transition into the workplace. These individuals may have been recently incarcerated or have lingering issues as a result of previous substance abuse, domestic violence or medical conditions.
SOAR is a multi-faceted curriculum. The program combines Skill Building and learning with community Outreach through a variety of volunteer experiences which leads to client Achievement and increased confidence and finally a Respect for one's self and others.
THI clients participate in a rigorous course which is designed to:
- Build clients' skills
- Replicate the workplace
- Prepare clients for a transition to a community-based program, employment, independence and self-sufficiency
Clients are referred by their THI Program Advisor. Participation in SOAR is then included in the client's Life Management Plan. Through an interdisciplinary process, clients are continuously coached to reach their optimal outcome. Clients learn how to succeed in the workplace. They attend workshops that cover job search techniques, interviewing skills, business etiquette, time management, and goal setting. Peer and volunteer facilitators from some of Cleveland's most prominent businesses provide individual and group lessons and assignments for GED preparation, honing computer skills and learn how to overcome barriers to employment. The have the opportuity to practice balancing work and personal responsibilites. Staff and volunteers support the client as she works to restructure her day to day activities and her life.
